USING YOUR LIFE TO LAUNCH YOUR

with Ibarionex Perello

This course will demonstrate how to use your life and your world as subject matter for your photography. Instead of waiting for that special vacation or event, you will rediscover your everyday world with a new set of eyes. The sessions will develop your skills as a photographer and a storyteller, which you’ll apply to any type of photography you enjoy.

You’ll learn how to see the world graphically based on the visual draws of light and shadow, line and shape, color and gesture. You will also discover how to create compositions in which you take complete control of the frame while allowing for moments of spontaneity and the unexpected to take shape.

Whether you use a DSLR, mirrorless, or smartphone camera, you will discover the joy and the satisfaction of purposeful everyday seeing, which will build your confidence as a photographer.

This class will meet twice a week for the month of July, giving you lots of time to dedicate to image-making between sessions.

OUTLINE

Class length: four weeks on Tuesdays & Saturdays.
Eight 150-minute live sessions consisting of lessons by Ibarionex and critiques conducted via Zoom

Video recordings of each session will be made and uploaded to a participants-only private channel in case you miss a session or wish to go back and watch something over again.

Session 1 - The Power of the Ordinary and Mundane

In this introductory session, we discuss the challenge of photographing our everyday world. We examine the work of great photographers for examples of how they have used their lives and their world to produce great photographs.

Session 2 - Light and Shadow

We introduce the concept of the visual draws starting with light and shadow. We discuss how developing an awareness of light and shadow provides one of the best ways to rediscover the ordinary through a photographic eye.

Session 3 - Line and Shape

In this session, we explore the importance of line and shape. We examine how abstracting the physical structures of a scene can build compositions that are balanced, pleasing, and impactful.

Session 4 - Color and Gesture

Next we explore the role of color and gesture as a key component of an effective photograph. We’ll examine when color serves the subject or instead becomes a distraction. We’ll also discuss how and why gestures can dramatically shape the experience of a photo above all else.

Session 5 - Owning the Frame

In this section, we talk about the importance of being aware of every aspect of the frame from the subject, foreground, and background. We examine how the photograph must consider what elements to include and exclude to achieve success with an image.

Session 6 - The Importance of Setting

Next we examine the scene as character and how such images can have an impact even without the presence of people. We’ll also discuss how the presence of people can serve either a primary or secondary role in the photograph.

Session 7 - A Visual Narrative

Finally, we will discuss the importance of culling and editing, using images produced over the past weeks to create an 8-image photo essay that illustrates this personal visual exploration.

Session 8 -Lessons Learned (Final Critiques)

The resulting photo essays will be shared and receive a final critique from the instructor and participants.

Addendum: A final slideshow of participant work will be compiled at the end of the class.
