Haiku poetry has become the most widely written classical form of poetry in the world.  During the three years that Dr. Kit Nagamura co-hosted NHK World’s international TV show “Haiku Masters,” she received works from poets living in over 160 countries.  The appeal of the form, developed in Japan, extends far beyond its brevity, however; haiku has been called “a way of life” for the effect it has of enriching and deepening the way one views the world.

Though writing haiku appears simple, most people who are new to the form find that…it’s actually a lot more challenging than they had thought, but also a lot more interesting.  Kit has developed an introductory lesson that shows how haiku can intersect with photography, to produce unique multidimensional creations known as shahai, or Photo Haiku.

Join Dr. Kit Nagamura, internationally renowned and decorated writer, poet, educator, and photographer in this special lesson FREE on Zoom, capacity limited to first 100.

This spring, sixteen photographers based in the US, Canada and Japan gathered each week in an online workshop led by George Nobechi to explore Japanese artistic concepts and metaphors in a class called "Sunday Night is Photo Night (Level II)."

Thanks to an introduction by class participant Carolyn Courtney, the organizers of the Louisville Photo Biennial became acquainted with the class's work and extended an invitation to exhibit at the festival in the Fall of 2021. The show takes place at the Asia Institute Crane House from Sep 11th~Oct 9th, 2021.

To commemorate this occasion, Nobechi Creative has created an online exhibition of this work.

SAM ABELL online exhibition

with George Nobechi

"Hagi, Then and Now" is an exhibition of photographs by Sam Abell and George Nobechi made over the course of many years.

In 1980 Sam Abell was assigned by National Geographic to document the small city of Hagi in southwest Japan. Beginning in 2016, Sam returned to Hagi with fellow photographer George Nobechi and the two of them documented both Sam's return and his connection to the local people, culture and landscape of his favorite city. This is an online exhibition of works that were on display in Hagi in 2019. There are all-new interviews and audio clips featuring conversations between Sam and George.

An online opening via Zoom with the presence of both photographers was held on Thursday, July 30, 2020. A recording of this, as well as full audio clips featuring interviews with Sam and George, as well as the photographs from the exhibition are just one click away below.

Sam Abell HAGI

TALK and exhibition, Nov 2017

In the Fall of 1980, National Geographic photographer Sam Abell spent two months in the remote, southwest Japanese city of Hagi on assignment to capture the place that spawned many of Japan’s leading reformists who changed the course of the nation’s history in the 1860s and beyond through the Meiji Restoration.

That experience led to a story in the National Geographic Magazine in 1984, as well as several of Sam’s iconic photographs. The city also had a profound impact on Sam’s photographic life. He was, as he said “on fire.”

Fast forward to 2016 and Sam returned to Hagi with George Nobechi, his mother and photographer Skip Klein. During this brief visit, the seeds or a reunion were planted— in life and also in photography. A visit with the mayor led to the approval to have a major retrospective exhibition of Sam’s work in Hagi: “Hagi, 1980” in November of 2017.

As part of this exhibition, Sam held court with a standing room-only crowd at the Hagi Meirin Center, the city’s new crown jewel tourism facility. He talked about his life in photography and his life in Hagi to a very appreciative audience. Following the event, a reception was held for honored guests including the mayor, and several people Sam photographed in 1980, as well as their relatives and friends.
