Sunday Night is Photo Night: A New Season

“A” + “B” = Much more than “C”

with Brett L Erickson

Every Sunday from March 2nd to 30th, 2025

6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Central Time

OVERVIEW:

In this all-new iteration of our long-running and popular Sunday Night is Photo Night (SNIPN) Series, Brett L. Erickson returns for a new season, one where enrollment in previous SNIPN classes is not a prerequisite.

Brett addresses the question: what if there were a way to distill the essence of meaning in photographs into a cohesive, engaging, illuminating practice?

In this class, you will learn just that, in an all-new approach spawned from Brett’s experiences in Japan in 2024 and the way that exposure to that culture can influence how we see the world. It is a class for those who wish to transform and elevate the way they think, see, and create, and for those who want to learn more about why photographs work instead of just the how.

This process will be broken down into a new visual language—a component “A,” a component “B,” and the sum of its parts becoming greater than their whole; in other words, “A” + “B” equals much more than “C.”

As part of the process, Brett will guide you in a small group setting through lectures, assignments, critiques, and feedback sessions as you learn this new method of photography in a small group, intensive setting.

Each Sunday evening session will be divided into a first-hour lesson, which will introduce a component of the process, and the second hour, which will look at your work and will be dedicated to critiques. Critiques will focus on the quality of your work and not the quantity.

Lessons will take place on Sundays between 6:00 PM–8:00 PM CST/CDT via Zoom. Please note that Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 9, 2025, so the time will shift to 6:00 PM–8:00 PM CDT after that date. Video recordings will be provided if you miss any lessons and will be available for you to go back and watch at any time

Brett l. Erickson

Born in 1973 in the United States, Dr. Brett L. Erickson is a visual philosopher whose photographs are focused on the tension between Eastern and Western concepts of being in the natural world: Zen and the eternal in opposition with the existential and phenomenological. This is made visible and critiqued through mythography, or fluid and transformational physical spaces which reflect human influence. His images have won acclaim internationally, have shown in locations such as London, Belfast, Santa Fe, New York City, Los Angeles and Berlin, and are held in public and private collections in North America, Europe and Asia.

I thought the class was excellent, maybe it came along at the right moment for me.

Brett Erickson is somewhat of a magician. In 2021-22, over the course of 3 six-week workshops, he took our entire “Sunday Night is Photo Night” group, which had been meeting together since 2020, into the realm of fine art photography. He challenged us to THINK about what we were doing as photographers, while gently shepherding us - through astute and challenging assignments - into making more meaningful images. The whole group watched each week with great excitement as the assignments came in, showing people taking bigger and bigger strides forward. We feel uniquely bonded to each other - and forever grateful to Brett.

With Brett’s lessons and feedback, I’ve made huge progress over the past two years. In many other workshops, I’ve worked on how to make images that have staying power, but it wasn’t until Brett’s lessons where I’ve finally moved from taking photos “of” to making images “about”. I’ve loved working with an instructor who constantly challenges me to be a better photographer.

This class it’s been very insightful and I believe I have grown as a photographer. This workshop has taken me deeper into seeing better as a photographer and shown me how to understand in ways no other workshop has. The collaborative and very supportive teaching (with lots of examples and lectures) provides for a great way to learn more about yourself and about photography. Brett’s application of philosophy and psychology as it applies to color and form in art and images was, I feel, a real turning point in how I create my images. It’s been a great experience and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in improving their photography skills. Nobechi has a fond place in my heart and I look forward to hopefully more workshops and other training.
